Abstract: This reproducible activity book, developed by teachers for grades 2 to 4, is part of a series that integrates childrens literature with science, mathematics, and other topics. This book provides strategies and activities for integrating early elementary science curriculum with more than 40 related childrens literature selections. The book is organized into four sections: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Process Skills. Topics include the human body, time, machines, weather, dinosaurs, air and wind, astronauts, and the water cycle. For each selection, the book provides a description of the featured picture book, specific science concepts, and related poetry and music. Follow up activities use various forms of expression including graphing, murals, experiments, estimating, writing, brainstorming, art projects, science journals, and dramatics. For example, a lesson based on THE VERY TINY SEED by Eric Carle asks children to use Carles tissue paper collage technique to illustrate their own book about seeds, to brainstorm a list of foods that grow from seeds, or to create a life cycle chart that follows a seed through the four seasons. Appendices provide a format for science journals, a way to collect science poetry, suggestions for research projects, a bibliography and an answer key. (Author/LCT) |
