Personal information ENC collects

ENC collects personal information from you in order to fulfill requests for print and electronic products and services. We only require information that is necessary to fulfill such requests. If you are requesting that ENC send you print or CD-ROM products, we will only require your name and mailing address. If you are requesting email services or signing up to participate in our discussion areas, your email information will be required, as will a login and password to make your experience private.

ENC does not sell or share your personal information with anyone outside of ENC and its subcontractors, UNLESS REQUIRED BY LAW. If at anytime you want to withdraw personal information from our database, please contact .

If you use the email feature available on each page to send a page link to a friend, you are required to submit your email address and your friend's email address. ENC uses this information only to send the email message; we do not store or maintain personal information from that transaction. We do not save your personal comments, your name, or the email addresses necessary to send the message. For that service, we store only a list of links sent and the date and time at which they were sent in order to gauge the popularity of different pages.

When you register for print or electronic services, we provide options for you to volunteer additional information about yourself and your role in education. This information is used to improve our products and services and is only analyzed in the aggregate. While we appreciate having this type of information to better serve all of our users, you are under no obligation to provide it.

ENC provides several opportunities for users to contact us through email or web-based forms. We use the personal information you provide only as it relates to answering your question. Records of how many people contact us per monthly period are kept; however, individual information is not kept in this form nor shared in any reporting process.

ENC links to hundreds of other web sites; we are not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of those web sites. Please see our disclaimer above for additional information.

ENC offers a discussion area on our site. Please be aware that any information you disclose in this area becomes public information; use caution when disclosing personal information in public areas on any web site.

Non-personal information collected by web system

Our web servers automatically record general information on all users who browse the content of our site. These data collection systems gather:

• Your IP address
• The Internet domain for your Internet service, such as company.com or school.edu.
• The type and version of the browser you are using to access enc.org (such as Netscape 4.0 or Internet Explorer 3.5)
• The type and version of the operating system you use (such as Macintosh or Windows)
• The address of the previous site you were visiting, if you linked to enc.org from another site
• The pages you visit on ENC and the files you download
• The date, time, and length of time of your visit.

The logs are periodically summarized and analyzed to study site usage over time to help us improve the site's organization, performance, and usefulness. This information is only examined in the aggregate, not at the individual level.

Cookies

Some of ENC's web pages use "cookies, " text files we place in your computer's browser to store your preferences. These files do not indicate any personally identifiable information, such as your email address, unless you have already chosen to volunteer that information to us in some way. If you choose to register with ENC, your personal information may be linked to the information stored in the cookie. We use cookies to improve your experience on the site and to understand how different features are used by visitors.

Collecting personal information from minors

Because ENC's target audience is K-12 teachers, students under the age of 18 may not register to take part in ENC Online forums. Some information may be of use to students, particularly educational web links. Access to these links does not require registration or the exchange of personal information. Students occasionally request homework assistance, a service that ENC does not offer. ENC staff respond to these messages and discard them without collecting personal information. Personal information about any user, whether adult or minor, is not shared or sold to others, UNLESS REQUIRED BY LAW.

Removing or correcting your personal information

If you are a registered user of ENC's web site, you will be able to login with your username and password to view and change your personal information yourself. ENC will make every effort to preserve your privacy and security by verifying your identify when you use our system. You may contact ENC at any time to request that your personal information be removed from our database, whether it is an email address for email services or mailing address for subscriptions to ENC Focus. Copyright and Usage Information

ENC holds copyright on all original materials we publish, including articles, catalog records, metadata, and photographs. However, since ENC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the federal government has the right to use the materials as it deems appropriate, and ENC routinely grants permission for materials to be reproduced by others.

Requests for permission to reprint must be submitted by letter, fax, or email. A credit line must accompany the reprint. Please use the following format:

Authors who submit articles for publication by ENC should be aware that their articles are considered to be work-made-for-hire, and authors do not retain copyright to the material and cannot restrict its use by ENC or the federal government, including its use in existing or future media.

ENC holds copyright on all original catalog records and metadata it creates. ENC and its affiliates often contribute original metadata to collaborating projects; in such cases, the metadata may be manipulated by the collaborator but ENC continues to hold copyright on the original work.

Users who contribute comments or reviews to ENC catalog records or postings to ENC discussions voluntarily grant ENC a nonexclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and full right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, and display the contribution throughout the world in any media. The user grants ENC the right to use the name (if any) that the user submits in connection with such contribution, if the user so chooses.

To the best of the user’s knowledge, use of the contribution by ENC does not violate any intellectual property rights and will not cause injury to any person or entity. ENC has the right but not the obligation to monitor and edit or remove any activity or contribution. ENC takes no responsibility and assumes no liability for any contribution made by the user or a third party.

Many of the resources available on our site are not produced or authored by ENC and are used by ENC with permission of the copyright holder. To reproduce such resources you will need to obtain permission from the copyright holder. ENC attempts to clearly identify such reproduced materials on our site.
