Abstract:
This Internet site, developed by middle school teacher Suzanne Alejandre, is a source of Web units, illustrated lesson plans, and interactive classroom activities for grades 5 to 8. Topics for the Web units range from the geometric constructions of circles with a discussion of symmetry to crystallography and fractals. Included in the lesson outlines are transparency masters and links to related Web sites. Alejandre is interested in helping students apply technology as a tool to learn math and offers step-by-step directions for using Claris Works spreadsheets for graphing linear, polynomial, and exponential functions. Also found at this site are interactive student lessons for investigating polyhedra and Mandelbrot Fractals with Java Applets and four interactive games that explore mathematical patterns and reasoning.
In one fully developed unit, Multicultural Math Fair, there are ten mathematical activities from diverse cultures described in both English and Spanish. For each activity there are links to sites with background information about the highlighted cultures. A layout map for the fair and pictures from the annual Math Fair held at Alejandre's school are also included. Abstracted 3/99. (JRS) |
