Abstract:
This World Wide Web (WWW) site, maintained for grades K to 12 by the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, offers information and educational materials on oceanography. The site features an online encyclopedia of oceanography as well as pages for students and teachers. Ocean Quest, the encyclopedia, contains illustrated articles about the Earth's oceans and the ocean floor, currents and tides, and marine life and sea water. The Students' Sea of Knowledge section contains ocean trivia, frequently asked questions about the ocean and its marine life, an online quiz, and career information. The Teacher's Realm contains lesson plans and information on educational programs for students and teachers interested in pursuing oceanography. The lesson plans, designed to show students how scientists and laymen interact with the ocean environment, integrate the study of science, math, social studies, physical education, creative art, and language arts through the application of oceanography topics. In a sample activity students model how, through a counter current system, the whale can bring the heat back into its body core without losing it's body heat when blood flows. They also create a mural of ocean life, demonstrate how fish avoid predators through quick physical movements, trick movements, and safety in large numbers, and calculate feeding rates of whales and compare this to the feeding rates of humans. Each lesson plan includes learning objectives, a list of materials, background information, and a procedure as well as student worksheets.
