Abstract:
This World Wide Web (WWW) site, maintained for grades 1 to 12 by the Southeastern Michigan Math-Science Learning Coalition, contains astronomy lessons and activities. The Southeastern Michigan Math-Science Learning Coalition provides a clearinghouse of lessons that can be done at home or in a classroom. The goals of this Learning Coalition are to provide students with hands-on and discovery based learning experiences promoting scientific and mathematical literacy, and opportunities to explore careers within science, mathematics, technology, and engineering fields. The Coalition's mission is to build a learning community to link science and math educational resources and career information to all children.
This site presents a collection of astronomy lesson plans that were submitted by many different Coalition partners. Visitors are encouraged to submit their own lessons and experiments via email. Astronomy lessons are organized by age group. Each lesson provides guiding questions, key concepts, and procedures, in addition to materials, extension ideas, and additional resources. Most of the lessons also include research related to the lesson, links to online database or photo archives, and links to careers that identify careers associated with the lesson. In a sample lesson, students construct paper scale models of the moons Io, Luna, and of Earth and Jupiter. They then use these models to explain the differences between the two moons. Students are presented fact sheets about the two moons, and images showing the relative scale of Jupiter, Io, Earth, and Luna. In another lesson, students use NASA Internet data to learn about how to determine the temperature of a star, and how to predict stellar temperatures based on the use of an H-R diagram. The site also provides a link to the Coalition homepage where visitors can find an alphabetical list of astronomy lessons as well as other science lessons organized by subjects or age group.
