Abstract:
This World Wide Web (WWW) site, part of the Ohio Math Works (OMW), is designed to help teachers prepare students for today's job market by giving them a reason to study the mathematics they will need in the world beyond school. The OMW project, targeted for students in grades 7, 8, and 9, offers teachers a kit of materials for teaching real world lessons related to the Ohio 9th grade proficiency test learning outcomes. The five broad goals for the project are to improve math literacy, to improve student attitudes toward math, to increase awareness of careers that use math, to integrate educational technologies into the classroom, and to improve teacher attitudes toward technology. Project lessons address the proficiency learning outcomes and link math to the world of careers through five theme based units: snack food manufacturing, fashion design, theme park design, weather forecasting, and newspaper sports reporting.
The site offers activities, mentoring, information, and web links for each unit. In addition to the units, the site contains a question of the month area, which is written by teachers and related to OMW lessons and state proficiency learning outcomes. Students can also view fractals and design patterns and tessellations with software found on the site. The teacher area includes information on the proficiency objectives, ideas on how to develop a business partnership, and a discussion group in which teachers can share their experiences and tips on teaching OMW lessons.
