Abstract: This Internet site, developed in conjunction with a PBS series of the same name, explores the history behind some of the world's greatest feats of engineering and the ingenuity of the engineers, architects, and builders who designed and built them. BUILDING BIG's goal is to increase student awareness of the built environment and the impact of technology on society, while teaching basic physical science concepts. The site describes, illustrates, and offers online opportunities to explore some of the science, mathematics, and engineering used in the building of bridges, domes, skyscrapers, dams, and tunnels.
A sample section features four interactive, online engineering labs where viewers investigate the dynamics of force, materials, load, and shape in design and construction. In another section, Challenges, viewers are given a scenario with a construction based problem related to the building of one of the five structure types. This interactive program allows the viewer to use supplied information to make design and material choices. The program helps the viewer determine from the choices what materials and design will lead to the successful completion of the structure. A databank contains detailed statistical information about each of the big structures mentioned. In another section, Local Wonders, teachers can find information about ways to explore the architecture of their neighborhood buildings and a submission form to have their project included on the web site.
