Abstract:
This book, written and illustrated for grades 6 to 12 as part of the BLACK AMERICANS OF ACHIEVEMENT series, presents the life and work of Charles Drew who conducted research on the properties and preservation of blood plasma and was a leader in establishing blood banks. The series offers positive multicultural role models with biographical sketches that outline how these exemplary African Americans served society through the excellence of their achievements. Each book in the series presents the career paths of great African Americans using photographs and simple text.

This book describes a pioneer in blood research, Charles Drew, who led America's first comprehensive blood banking program. Blood research and surgery were Drew's specialties as a scientist. The book discusses Drew's work during the massive Blood for Britain project, and his efforts as an assistant director of the American Red Cross's national program for blood procurement. Drew's pioneering work in human plasma research paved the way for later discoveries of other important uses for blood products. He also made major contributions to the field of medical education by training the majority of America's first generation of black surgeons. Drew succeeded in each phase of his life in being an outstanding exemplar of black achievement. Throughout the book, black and white photographs depict episodes of Drew's life.
