Abstract:
This web site is designed to help students in grades 6 to 12 discover the value of pi by using an online applet. Students can work independently or in groups. The web site consists of an introduction to the idea of measuring circles, the applet that allows students to generate data of diameters and circumferences of various circles, a page that takes students through an analysis of the data, and a collection of facts relating to pi. The applet presents students with two sliders. Students use one slider to choose the diameter of a circle that appears on the screen. They use the second slider to roll the circle through one complete revolution along a ruler and, thereby, measure the circumference of the circle. The diameter and associated circumference are then recorded and another diameter chosen. Students continue in this fashion until they have generated at least ten sets of data. They then use their data to calculate the value of the ratio of the circumference to the diameter for each circle and, in this way, discover the value of pi. Finally, students can read facts about the history of attempts to calculate pi and the value used to approximate pi at various stages in history. (Author/MM) |
