Abstract: This web site provides more than 60 lesson plans for grades K-6 in which students use state quarters to explore topics in many different subjects. Lesson plans are provided for K-1, 2-3, and 4-6 grade bands, with lessons in math, science, reading, and more for each grade band. The lessons provide background information, needed handouts and lists of materials, extension activities and suggestions for differentiated instruction. Typical lessons take one or two class periods. Some of the math topics covered include number sense, addition and subtraction, estimation, and graphing.
One lesson for grades 2 and 3, for example, has students connect the values of coins to the fraction of a dollar that each coin is worth. Students then play a game where they spin a spinner to get a random coin value that they add to their total. The first to reach one dollar wins. Abstracted 10/03. (Author/FAM) |
