Abstract: This book, written for grades K to 6, is organized around a theme of gardening and uses childrens literature to introduce students to multicultural literature, ecology, and the impact of plants on the environment, world economics, and politics. The book contains 45 lesson plans, each of which focuses on a specific book about gardening and offers a variety of activities designed to enhance creativity and build literacy skills. Chapters cover such themes as dreaming about gardens, special herb, prehistoric or native gardens, gardens around the world, plants, and folk tales. The book also introduces students to famous gardeners such as George Washington Carver and Beatrix Potter. Each lesson includes a book sharing time, activities that incorporate gardening, language arts, and creative art, and a treat recipe. They also feature a poetry reference, word game, and a list of supplementary reading materials. Sample activities have students build a bird house, use landscape design templates and graph paper to design a garden, and identify endangered plants in their community. An annotated bibliography is also included. (Author/LCT) |
