Abstract: This Internet site provides lessons for high school and undergraduate level students that accompany peer-reviewed articles. Articles are written by scientists, science educators, and science students on issues related to seven biological challenges: biodiversity, environment, genomics, biotechnology, evolution, new frontiers in the sciences, and education. The goal of the site is to promote science literacy by engaging students in reflecting on the relationship between human activity and the natural course of evolution. Other goals are to foster a global community attitude of ecoliving and ecoculture and to encourage students to pursue studies in the biosciences.
Lessons are written by educators, peer-reviewed by educators, and correlated to the National Science Education Standards (NSES). A sample lesson begins with an article about the dangers of genetically modified (GM) foods. Students learn that current scientific studies regarding the safety of GM foods are, largely, based on inadequate research design and faulty assumptions. Follow-up activities involve students in debating the advantages and disadvantages of GM foods, interviewing a Biotech company about its GM safety guidelines, and simulating a GM research team assigned the task of genetically modifying a certain food.
