   Synopsis: Maintained by The Federal Emergency Management Agency, this site helps kids cope with and understand disasters. There are special activities for younger children, and opportunities for children to communicate with one another about what it means to experience natural disasters. In addition, this site has games, jokes, and cartoons, many dealing with how to prevent disasters.

2. International Year of the Ocean 1998

   Synopsis: NOAA is one of many U.S. federal agencies participating in the Year of the Ocean, and they have created this Web site for all audiences. Learn how to get free materials about the ocean, and use the Kids' and Teachers' Corner for resources about marine life and the ocean environment. This site provides links to other federal agencies and ocean Web sites.

3. Neptune's web

   Synopsis: The U.S. Navy has created this Web resource to help teachers and students explore the mysteries of the deep. The Teacher's Realm has oceanography lesson plans that combine art, literature, math, science, and social studies. The Student's Sea of Knowledge includes a quiz, a section on careers in oceanography, and links to other ocean Web sites.

4. PBS Mathline
   Grade(s): K - 12 ENC#: 004048
   Synopsis: Here is a professional development program that teachers can participate in when they have time. PBS Mathline uses both the Internet and video for year-long professional development seminars. Teachers become part of online communities to discuss math content, pedagogy, assessment, and the use of the Internet as a teaching tool. This Web site includes Connections, a monthly feature with teaching tips, math challenges, and ideas for assessment.

5. Prisoners or protected? A web quest exploring the humanity of zoos

   Grade(s): 5 - 8 ENC#: 012499
   Synopsis: This Web quest was designed for upper elementary and middle school students to study and discuss the humanity of zoos. Students, with the help of their teachers, assume different roles--animal rights activist, habitat expert, zoo evaluator, and zoologist--and explore a variety of information resources. The Web site includes a glossary, links to several sites from and about zoos, and instructions for navigating this quest. 6. Show-Me Center: supporting standards-based middle grades mathematics curricula

   Synopsis: This center was created by the National Science Foundation to assist schools and districts in implementing middle school math curricula. The Curricula Showcase allows users to look at a variety of attributes of five middle school curriculum programs. 7. Stanford SOLAR Center: providing Solar On-Line Activity Resources for the joy of solar science exploration

   Synopsis: 05be you've had a chance to get outside and enjoy the sunshine this summer. Now enjoy the Sun online, with this great selection of sun-related information, activities, and lesson plans that use real data from the Solar Oscillations Investigation (SOI) and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) data. Lesson plans are multidisciplinary and written for students in grades 4-12.

8. The Fractory: an interactive tool for creating and exploding fractals

   Synopsis: Anyone who has seen fractals knows how beautiful they can be, but what good are they? Come to this Web site and find out. See some fractals, learn why they are worth studying, explore the math involved in how fractals are generated, and make some of your own. This was an entry in the ThinkQuest contest, created by three students on their way into the ninth grade.

   Synopsis: Designed to engage people of all ages in exploring technologies affecting their lives, this Web site will inspire the young to become innovators in technology. Online exhibits encourage exploration of topics like robotics, satellites, and DNA. Take a look at the Webopedia, a searchable collection of computer terms for any aspiring techno-wizard.

10. WWW resources for teaching statistics

    Synopsis: This collection of resources was compiled to show how statistics can be taught using the Web. Resources include online course materials and texts, Java demonstrations, and data to use. This was originally presented as a paper for the Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association.
